Bangladesh General Election Potentially Targeted In Cyberwarfare



On 8 January 2024, the Bangladesh Election Commission reportedly claimed the general election that took place the previous weekend was subject to foreign interference via a cyberattack on systems pertaining to an application which, nonetheless, was not essential to the electoral process. The affected application reportedly enabled gathering historical data and had no significant impact on the election.


Claims were made that network activity attributed to this event point to Ukraine and Germany as countries of origin of the attack. Yet, no specifics were provided. Similarly, no details pertaining to the attack stream or event type were shared; however, available information suggests a DDOS-type event.


The election saw Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina securing her fourth straight term.
